ROSCIGNO VECCHIA
The ghost village
In the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, there is a ghost village: Roscigno Vecchia. Some episodes of landslides and a slow continuous sliding of the soil, pushed the population to leave the village in the early 1900’s.
For this reason, it is defined as the “Pompeii of the 21st century”. In fact, everything has remained as it was then: the stone houses, the rooms with the old beds, the kitchen furniture and the stables.
Over the years, the village, the square with the centuries-old plane trees, the church and the stone fountain have been chosen as film setting by the Italian directors Sergio Staino, Mario Martone, Alessandro Valori.
Wandering around the village, it will not be difficult to meet the only remaining inhabitant, Giuseppe Spagnuolo, who has now become a sort of genius loci. Furthermore, thanks to the volunteers of the local association, we will be able to enter into the old houses and the Museum of Rural Life.
