CERTOSA DI SAN LORENZO
Come and experience the atmosphere of one of the largest and most important monasteries in Europe!
The Certosa di San Lorenzo, whose construction was started in the 14th century, is nowadays considered “one of the most beautiful baroque monument in Southern Italy”. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage monument since 1998, it is the largest Chartusian monastery in Italy, that houses works of outstanding artistic value, which are the result of over 450 years of Carthusian monks’ presence.
This guided tour lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It starts from the outer courtyard with an introduction to the beautiful façade and to the production spaces. Then we move to the inner rooms where inestimable value artworks are preserved: the precious wooden choir inlays, the baroque stucco decorations and frescoes, the altars made in the refined technique of the “scagliola”, the marble floors, the monumental staircase and the spiral stone staircase.
Upon request, and for groups of adults, it is possible to visit the library and the cellars.
Located a few km from the Pertosa-Auletta Caves and just one hour from the Cilento coast, the Certosa di Padula is a must-see landmark for all visitors in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano Park.
