AMALFI

The pearl of the coast

Amalfi was the first Italian Maritime Republic and a maritime power from the 9th to the 12th century. Its navigators optimized the use of the compass and issued the first maritime code (the Tabula Amalphitana). The superb Duomo is the focus of the town, an example of Romanesque art mediated with Arab-Norman influences. You cannot miss a visit to the baroque crypt, preserving the relics of St. Andrew, the Cloister of Paradise and the Museum.

In front of the marina is the ancient dockyard, where the galleys of the maritime republic were built, now home to the Museo della Bussola e del Ducato, the museum dedicated to the compass and the ducat. Very interesting is furthermore the medieval paper mill, dating back to the 13th century. Still in operation, it allows visitors to observe all the stages of making the paper, which is produced following the traditional method. It is also possible to buy here handcrafted items in “bambagina”, the traditional Amalfi paper.

Together with the tour of Amalfi, guided visits to other villages of the coast are possible.
